Guidelines & Getting Started

Suggested Wall Thickness

The chart (click here to view) shows suggested wall thicknesses for profiles of varying sizes. As with extrusion tolerances, the chart information should be used as a guideline only. We've extruded wall thicknesses less than 0.020"!
Extrusions can be liberally designed. Consider all that you need in your part and incorporate as many features as you can. For example, if drilling a screw hole in the part is necessary for assembly of your finished product, consider designing a screw port into the extrusion. Design features may help save on additional steps and costs down the road.

The following guidelines may help you optimize your extrusion design
  1. Near-net shapes can reduce or eliminate further fabrication operations
  2. Screw slots and fastening points as part of the design to make final assembly easier
  3. Tooling costs - extrusion tooling for solid profiles is less expensive than for hollow or semi-hollow shapes
  4. Grooves or ribs in your extrusion can minimize the appearance of scratches or act as stiffeners
  5. Small radii on corners versus sharp edges
These are guidelines only. Let us know what you need!
